Welcome to A-PECS!

A-PECS’ overall mission is to pioneer sustainable solutions for energy, environment & diagnostics. Led by several professors and their dynamic teams, A-PECS brings together expertise and cutting-edge research to tackle pressing challenges of our time. Prof. Karolien De Wael is active in different fields of (photo)electrochemical and (bio)analytical sciences. Her team performs fundamental, methodological and application-oriented research involving a wide range of analytical techniques with a focus on the chemical analysis or electrochemical sensing of one or multiple analyte species, with applications in environmental sensing and medical diagnostics. Prof. Siegfried Denys’ activities focus on technology development and engineered solutions for environmental remediation, in particular indoor and outdoor air purification. The scope of these activities ranges from computational multiphysics modeling, to construction and validation of real-life prototypes. Part-time prof. Tom Tytgat focuses on sensing technologies and complementary analytical tools for gas and odor detection. Finally, prof. Sammy Verbruggen works on solar photo(electro)catalysis for various energy and environmental applications, ranging from air purification, over CO2 conversion and self-cleaning surfaces, to hydrogen production technologies. His team takes a holistic approach that starts at the fundamental level of (plasmonic) photo(electro)catalyst synthesis, spanning all the way to novel photo(electro)reactor development.

At A-PECS, our strategic vision extends beyond the laboratory, aiming to cultivate a portfolio of sensor, analysis, and reactor technologies rooted in responsible research, sustainability, and innovation. Many of our projects are interdisciplinary in nature and involve collaboration with scientists and industry in different fields. We focus on bridging the gap between the academic world, industry and society and are open for collaboration.

A-PECS involves members of the IOF-ENVIROMICS and IOF-InSusChem consortia, as well as the NANOlab Center of Excellence.
