Sara Bals is a Full Professor at EMAT. Her main research interest consists of the application and further development of electron tomography for advanced nanostructured materials. In 2013 she received an ERC Starting Grant entitled “Colouring Atoms in 3 Dimensions”. By combining state-of-the-art electron microscopy with advanced 3D reconstruction algorithms, the positions and chemical nature of individual atoms in a broad variety of nanomaterials are routinely measured in her group. These measurements are now also performed under realistic conditions in heating, liquid or gas flow experiments to investigate nanomaterials under working conditions. This expertise is essential for the nanoscale characterization of beam sensitive perovskite materials under working conditions. In 2019, she received an ERC Consolidator Grant entitled "3D Structure of nanomaterials under realistic conditions".
Her Curriculum Vitae can be found on her personal webpage.
