Olivier Aerts is a full-time senior staff member at the Dermatology department of the University Hospital Antwerp (UZA) and he is responsible for the Contact Allergy Unit. As a researcher he is affiliated with the research group Immunology / INFLAMED Centre of Excellence of UAntwerp. His clinical and research activities mainly focus on T-cell mediated hypersensitivity such as allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetics, topical drugs and preservatives (isothiazolinones), photo-contact allergy, delayed-type drug hypersensitivity, and occupational contact allergy. He is an active member of the Belgian Contact and Environmental Dermatitis Group (BCEDG), the French Groupe d’Etudes et de Recherche en Dermato-Allergologie (GERDA), the American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) , the European Society of Contact Dermatitis (ESCD) and the European Environmental Contact Dermatitis Research Group (EECDRG). As such he is involved in multiple national and international collaborations on T-cell mediated hypersensitivity. Currently, there is an active collaboration with the UAntwerp NatuRA laboratory on the clinical and chemical analytical investigation of contact allergy caused by medical devices, diabetes devices in particular.
