Ludo Cuyvers is emeritus professor of the University of Antwerp, Belgium, where he is still Director of the Centre for ASEAN Studies, and professor extraordinary at the North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus), South Africa and frequently a visiting professor at the National Institute of Development Administration, Bangkok, Thailand. He is also Chairman of the European Institute for Asian Studies, a Brussels based European think tank, and Associate Research Fellow of United Nations University-Centre for Regional Integration Studies, Bruges, Belgium. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1977 from the Faculty of Applied Economics, University of Antwerp, Belgium.
Ludo Cuyvers was involved in research on international economics. For three decades he has been doing research on economic development in East and South East Asia. He published five textbooks, edited three volumes with international publishers, and scholarly articles in academic journals, among which Economica, European Economic Review, Economic Journal, Journal of Post-Keynesian Economics, Long Range Planning, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Asian Economic Journal, Review of World Economics, Journal of Asian Economics, International Marketing Review, International Business Review, International Journal of Manpower, and other peer reviewed international journals.
Between 1989 and 2009 Ludo Cuyvers was a member of the Board of Directors of Office National du Ducroire (Brussels), the Belgian federal credit insurance company, and since 1991 until today he is member of the Board of Directors of Flanders Investment & Trade, the export and investment promotion agency of the Flemish region of Belgium. He was consultant for the Belgian government, the Flemish government, the European Commission, the International Labour Organization and the Department of Trade and Industry (South Africa). Professor Cuyvers was also promoter and director of international development co-operation projects in Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
