Michiel’s research focuses on two topics: sewage treatment and biological nitrogen removal & CO2 sequestration via enhanced mineral weathering. During his PhD, he studied multiple control tools to steer the microbial community to enable partial nitritation/anammox, key in the transition towards energy-positive sewage treatment. Michiel’s skills cover bioreactor design, biological processes monitoring and pilot operation. Skills that will come to great use in his current research project on Bio-Accelerated Mineral weathering (BAM!) for which he will develop an advanced multi-phase bioreactor.
