Building G.Z has been home to the Faculty of Applied Engineering since 2016. Now, two additional floors will be added on part of the building.

On top of the lowest wing, which now has three floors, a fourth and fifth floor will be added. This will provide much needed space, as more and more scientific research is conducted at the engineering faculty.

Electrochemical reactors

These extra floors will house the research group Applied Electrochemistry and Catalysis (ELCAT), which conducts research into the development of fuel cells, hydrogen and batteries, focusing on green and sustainable chemical processes. The scientists currently work at Campus Drie Eiken, but will move to Campus Groenenborger.

Technical campus

In June 2016, the Faculty of Applied Engineering found a brand new home on Campus Groenenborger: Building Z. The building houses laboratories, construction workshops, research areas, computer rooms and offices. The building is home to the programmes electromechanical engineering technology and civil engineering technology (both taught in Dutch) of the Faculty of Applied Engineering.

In Building Z, sensors monitor the temperature, energy flow and air quality in every room. This system ensures for instance that windows are opened automatically in summer to release excess heat, taking the weather forecast for the next day into account. This way, the building is a model of sustainability. Moreover, students and researchers can experiment endlessly with the installations.

Schedule

The building is expected to be water- and windproof by September 2025. Following that, the technologies will be installed and labs fitted out. If everything goes according to schedule, the new floors will open in the second half of 2026.
