Filmscreening 'Atlantique'

25 March 2025

At European universities, the human and cultural sciences are still predominantly approached from a North Atlantic perspective. However, this is gradually changing. We increasingly realise that we get a richer and more complex view of reality when we also study it from non-European points of view. This is why the Faculty of Arts explicitly wants to include academics and culture-makers from outside the North Atlantic world. In the coming months, we intend to listen specifically to surprising and instructive voices from Sub-Saharan Africa.

In honour of International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade on 25 March, we are organising a film screening of Mati Diop's French Senegalese film Atlantique, a mesmerising film about growing up, first love and letting go. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival - the first film by a black female filmmaker to participate there - and won the Grand Prix.

About Atlantique

In a suburb of Dakar, Senegal, the blossoming love between Ada and Souleiman seems to be without worries. But the veil of tender infatuation hides a bleak future. Ada is about to marry another man she does not love. And Souleiman, along with a group of construction workers who have not received wages for months, decides to leave the country across the ocean in search of a better future.

A few days after the young men leave, a sudden fire disrupts Ada's wedding party and the local girls are stricken with a mysterious fever. Issa, a young policeman, begins an investigation.
