Symbols of resistance and loss

War does not only destroy buildings and take lives—it also tries to erase culture, identity, and everyday life. Here you see three powerful photos: the ruins of the National Library, the Markale florist, and a landscape of destroyed houses.

Each one shows a different kind of loss but also the strength of those who refused to give up. The National Library was burned down, taking away books and history that belonged to everyone. The florist kept selling flowers, even during the war, refusing to let violence change who she was. The landscape of ruined houses shows how war forces people to leave their homes, suddenly turning familiar places into empty spaces.

These photos remind us that war is not just about fighting—it is also about what is lost and the people who resist in their own way.
