Doctoral research
PhD in the Arts
Doing a PhD
On average, 130 PhD students are active at the Faculty of Arts in the various research groups. Every year about twenty of them defend their thesis.
Are you interested in doing a PhD at our faculty? If so, you can contact the Antwerp Doctoral School for help and information.
Within the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, your PhD is supported by:
- Rosina Hoydonckx
- Elke Nelen
- Astrid Witters (doctoral research in the visual/performative/... arts)
You can send them your questions at phdflw@uantwerpen.be.
How does a PhD at the Faculty of Arts come along?
PhD research is supervised by a promoter. Next to doing research, PhD students can follow courses at the Antwerp Doctoral School. The public defense of the thesis is the concluding piece of the PhD.
PhD research
When you have found a promoter and financing for your PhD, you will carry out your PhD research at one of the faculty's research groups.
PhD education
The PhD programme at the University of Antwerp is open in the sense that PhD students do not have to follow a strict education programme. You choose in consultation with your promoter courses and activities inside and outside the University of Antwerp. The university encourages you to take part in interuniversitary and international programmes.
PhD defense
The conclusion of your PhD is the defense of your doctoral thesis, which can be attended by anyone who is interested.
