Francqui Research Professor 2023-2026: Prof. Sonja Hohloch
We are pleased to invite you to Professor Sonja Hohloch’s inaugural lecture entitled ‘Symmetries in dynamics’ on the occasion of her appointment as Francqui Research Professor 2023-2026.
In awarding the title of Research Professor, the Francqui Foundation grants a professor or other young researcher at a Belgian university the opportunity to devote significantly more of his or her time to research by financing partial teaching substitution. Thanks to this fellowship and the associated research credits, Professor Sonja Hohloch can dedicate most of her time during this period on research in the field of Pure Mathematics, in particular on the classifications of integrable Hamiltonian systems and their singularities.
Programme:
- Welcome by Prof. Herwig Leirs, Rector of the University of Antwerp
- Introduction Francqui Foundation by Ms. Greet T'Jonck, Secretary-general Francqui Foundation
- Laudation by Prof. Maarten Weyn, Vice-rector for Research and Impact
- Masterclass ‘Symmetries in dynamics’ by Prof. Sonja Hohloch
- Closing words by Prof. Maarten Weyn, Vice-rector for Research and Impact

Abstract inaugural lecture
Title: Symmetries in dynamics
Many objects have natural symmetries and/or move in a symmetric way like a rotating ball or a spinning top. Mathematically, such situations are usually described by a system of differential equations that has preserved quantities. If such a system has a maximal number of independent, preserved quantities, it is often referred to as an integrable system.
In this talk, we explain in an intuitive way how far such systems in low dimensions can be characterized and classified by geometric visualization.
