UAntwerp introduces international bachelor’s program on sustainability

Ten European universities join forces for a unique bachelor’s program

The Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) Alliance, which includes the University of Antwerp, is preparing to launch a groundbreaking Joint Bachelor in Urban Sustainability Studies in the 2025/2026 academic year. The unique program aims to equip students with the tools to tackle urgent environmental challenges in both urban and rural settings.

“The three-year degree will offer students the opportunity to engage with sustainability issues in diverse European contexts, providing them with a comprehensive, hands-on education,” rector Herwig Leirs (UAntwerp) explains. “Participants will explore solutions to the most urgent urban and rural sustainability challenges while earning a joint Bachelor’s degree, recognized by seven top universities within the YUFE network.”

Cities of dreams and nightmares

The programme offers a dynamic and flexible learning experience. In the first year, students will focus on foundational skills and knowledge, with the option to study at any of the seven partner universities.

In years two and three, students will have the chance to personalize their studies by selecting minors from across 10 YUFE universities, from Spain to Finland to Croatia, matching their strengths and interests and gaining international experience by studying at multiple locations throughout Europe. A grasp from the different minors offered: ‘Borders: Europe & Russia’ (Finland), ‘Cities of Dreams and Nightmares’ (UK), ‘Urban Health & Wellbeing’ (Poland), ‘Urban Ecology in Europe’ (France), …

The programme culminates in a dissertation project that allows students to showcase their expertise in urban sustainability.

International network

The initiative aims to prepare students to become leaders in sustainable urban development. “An international perspective, along with strong language skills, such as proficiency in English, will greatly enhance your career prospects,” says rector Leirs. “This program not only sets a new standard in international joint education but also equips you to excel in global collaboration. As a graduate of the Bachelor in Urban Sustainability Studies, you’ll already have a strong international network of peers, educators, and industry professionals across Europe.”

Applications for the program are now open. Prospective students can learn more by attending one of YUFE’s upcoming webinars.
