Many students find writing a thesis quite a challenge. Because they normally have to manage alone, it can sometimes be difficult to get going or stay motivated. That’s why Monitoraat op Maat (Linguapolis), in collaboration with the Library and the Study Advice and Student Counselling Services, organises the Dutch Writing Week: students spend a week writing their thesis as part of a set programme, supported by student coaches.
The Dutch Writing Week is offered in July, December, February and April, both on campus and online. Students write in groups of about 20 participants and follow a fixed daily structure. Each day begins and ends with a collective moment where they establish their writing goals and evaluate their progress. During the day, students write independently and can contact student coaches with questions. In the afternoon, they get the opportunity to attend a workshop on academic writing or study planning.
Feedback from participants shows that students find the Dutch Writing Week really valuable. The fixed structure helps them develop a productive work rhythm and stay motivated. Group dynamics and the guidance from coaches also help create an effective and stimulating writing environment. Students said about the latest Dutch Writing Week (February 2025):
‘We got more support than I expected and the tips I got were also very useful. It helps to know that you’re not the only one who sometimes get stuck writing the thesis!’
‘I was looking for a space to focus, this was just what I needed.’
‘The progress I was able to make on my thesis was beyond my expectations. I found it a hugely enjoyable and even fun week and would love to come back in April.’
The first Dutch Writing Week took place in July 2020. Since then, more than 500 students have taken part in one or more writing weeks.
