21/06/2024 - Establishment of Electrification Institute
In 2024, the Electrification Institute was established at the University of Antwerp, and is located at BlueApp, the pre-incubator of UAntwerp. It combines the research of ELCAT, ElectrifHy and the group PLASMANT (of our chemistry department). It pursues various lines of research, developing/implementing young technologies for the future within the concept of ‘power-to-x’, utilising electrochemistry, plasma chemistry and power-to-heat technologies. The research activities will pave the way towards a more sustainable and electrified industry, enabling Flanders to be one of the leading innovators in this field.
26/04/2024 - AHA Award winners
We are very proud to announce that the head of the PLASMANT group, Annemie Bogaerts won the AHA Award in the category “Achieved” for Research Innovation, together with Tom Breugelmans, head of ELCAT at the Antwerp Innovation Night.
On top of that, the spinoff from group PLASMANT, D-CRBN, won the Award “The One to Watch” for most successful startup!
The awards were selected by a jury composed of representatives from various companies.
Congratulations to our colleagues !!!

09/11/2023 - New publication - ORSY: "The synthesis of levulinic acids from muconic acids in hot water" by Céderic Ver Elst, Robby Vroemans, Mathias Bal, Sergey Sergeyev, Carl Mensch and Bert Maes in Angewandte Chemie
We are excited to share the latest publication on the synthesis of levulinic acids from muconic acids in hot water. An exciting result from the Maes group of the research division Organic Synthesis (ORSY). This work was selected as inside cover for the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.
You can also read about this invention in an interview prof. Maes gave to C2W | Mens & Molecule.
06/10/2023 - The board of trustees of The Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) has announced the new fellowships fundamental and strategic basic research. For the Chemistry Department Thijs De Vos, Léon Luntadila Lufungula and Robine Cleirbaut were selected. Congratulations!
Thijs has started his PhD within the research group Organic Synthesis (ORSY) where he is conducting research towards developing new methods for the synthesis of organofluorides. Léon is currently a PhD student with the research group Structural Chemistry (STRUCCHEM). His project is concerned with studying the structure and interactions in surface-modified titania, whereby bi-functional phosphonates are grafted on the surface and the application of these hybrid materials as metal scavengers. Robine is currently conducting a PhD study in which she performs research on the immobilisation of dye decolorizing peroxidase on titania materials, with the final goal being the development of biosensors for the detection of harmfull waste, such as phenols. She is conducting this study in the research group Theory and Spectroscopy of Molecules and Materials (TSM²). We wish them all good luck, curiosity and fascinating discoveries in their research.
01/09/2023 - New publication - Plasmant: "Challenges in unconventional catalysis" by Annemie Bogaerts, Gabriele Centi, Volker Hessel and Evgeny Rebrov in Catalysis Today
14/03/2023 - LinkedIn group alumni association
The Department of Chemistry is starting an alumni association. Through this LinkedIn group we want to connect our alumni with each other and inform them about our future activities.
This group connects alumni, students, professors and lecturers, stakeholders and staff of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Antwerp.
