Medicine and Health Sciences

Exchange students medicine

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has partnerships with numerous medical schools and faculties across Europe. Although we do not offer an English programme, we have welcomed an increasing amount of medical students in the past few years through the Erasmus+ programme for study, for clinical traineeships or for a combination of both.

The information on this page will help you to prepare your exchange programme.

I want to take courses of the medicine programme (study)

General conditions

  • Bilateral agreement: a valid inter-institutional Erasmus+ agreement between your home university and the University of Antwerp or between your Faculty and ours is required.
  • Academic career: you should at least be in your third year of medical studies at the moment of application.
  • Language skills: you must have a good command of English, oral as well as written (min. level B2). Intensive Dutch language courses are strongly recommended if you wish to take courses that are taught in Dutch.
  • Duration: one semester or a full academic year.

Study programme

We do not offer an English programme. Only a handful of courses of our Bachelor and Master programme are taught in English to accommodate international students ('green courses'). Besides these courses in English, we also offer courses with facilities for exchange students ('yellow courses'). These courses are taught in Dutch, but the lecturers provide facilities in English (e.g. study material, handbook, exam, …).

The courses we offer mainly consist of theory. Some courses comprise a limited amount of practice in the hospital or our skills lab. This approach can differ from your home university, where theory and practice (in the hospital) are intertwined and offered alternately. This is not the case in Antwerp.

Have a look at the curriculum for exchange students. Read the guidelines carefully and use this curriculum to draft your study programme.

Attention: As per the guidelines of the Erasmus programme, we don't accept paper or PDF versions of the Learning Agreement any more, but only work with the new Digital Learning Agreements. Find out more on how to prepare this Digital Learning Agreement.

I want to do only a clinical traineeship

General conditions

  • Academic career: you should at least be in your fourth year of medical studies at the moment of application.
  • Language skills: you must have a good command of English, oral as well as written, and a thorough knowledge of medical English (min. level B2). English supervision can be provided, but contact with patients will be in Dutch most of the time. A basic knowledge of Dutch is therefore highly recommended.
  • Duration: a clinical traineeship always lasts minimum 4 weeks and is full-time (3 ECTS). The maximum duration is 12 weeks, consisting of 4 weeks in 3 different departments/disciplines.

Mobility Programme

  • Erasmus Student Mobility for Placement (SMP) preferably
    • We do accept students from non-partner universities, but priority is always given to students from Erasmus+ partners.
    • ≥ 2 months and maximum 3 months.

Due to limited amount of clinical traineeship positions we only process applications within the Erasmus programme. Applications of 'free movers' will not be processed

All general information regarding the application procedure for exchange students is available on the webpages of our International Relations Office.

This medical screening is usually scheduled in the week before the start of your traineeship. Please take this into consideration when planning your arrival. Note that you will not be able to start your traineeship if you have not had your medical screening.

I want to combine courses with a clinical traineeship

The courses we offer to Erasmus students mainly consist of theory. Some courses comprise a limited amount of practice in the hospital or in our skills lab. Full-time clinical traineeships are scheduled in the 5th and 6th year of our curriculum. This approach might differ from the medical programme in your home institution, where theory and practice are intertwined and offered alternately. That is why we offer incoming Erasmus students the opportunity to combine their studies with a full-time clinical traineeship in the university hospital.

General conditions

  • Bilateral agreement: a valid inter-institutional Erasmus+ agreement between your home university and the University of Antwerp or between your Faculty and ours is required.
  • Duration and timing: a clinical traineeship always lasts minimum 4 weeks and is full-time (3 ECTS; ca. 40 hours/week). It cannot overlap with theoretical courses. Only when there is a gap in your study programme you are allowed to do the traineeship.
