The Department of Biology covers a broad field of research biology with attention to all levels of organization: ranging from what occurs within a living cell, to the functioning of organisms and populations, to the study of communities and entire ecosystems.

This high-quality research is carried out by top international researchers. The department is also strong in the field of ecology, and its behavioral research is unique in Flanders.

Students are introduced to the research through project work during the bachelor's program. Later, they actively participate through their master's thesis, and for those who wish to further develop into researchers, there is the doctorate. The department also attracts students from other (foreign) universities.
