Civil liability insurance
We strongly recommend that you take out civil liability insurance to cover any adverse events that occur outside of work. This insurance covers damage that you or a family member registered at the same address in Belgium causes to a third party, such as accidently knocking the mirror off a parked car when cycling or spilling your coffee on a friend’s laptop.
All major banks and insurance companies offer the possibility to take out this type of insurance. You can also sign up for this insurance through the university. More information can be found on the intranet of the International Staff Office.
Tenant liability insurance
When you rent a property, you are responsible for any damage to the building or property, except in circumstances beyond your control. In Belgium, almost all rental agreements (unless explicitly included in the contract) require the tenant to take out insurance on the rented property to cover these risks.
Most banks and insurance companies in Belgium also provide tenant liability insurance. It is advisable to take your rental agreement with you when arranging your tenant liability insurance.
International staff (who receive a salary or grant through the HR Department) can take out tenant’s liability insurance through the university. More information about this insurance can be found on the University of Antwerp’s intranet (Pintra).
Work accidents insurance
As an employee of the University of Antwerp you are covered for accidents that occur at work or during the journey to and from your work place (commuting).
You should always report your business trips abroad through Peoplesoft (log-in access only). This reporting means that you are covered by work accident insurance if an accident happens during your trip.
