There is a comprehensive system of crèches, playgroups and kindergartens in Belgium for working parents.
In Antwerp, your child can be cared for by a childminder at a private property (“onthaalmoeder” in Dutch) or at a daycare centre (state-run or private). Prices can be either a fixed monthly rate or an amount dependent on your income. The latter varies between €1.31 and €27 per day per child depending on the net income of the household, regardless of the marital status of the parent(s).
Childcare expenses are tax-deductible up to a maximum of €11.20 per day. You will receive a tax certificate from your childcare provider at the beginning of the following year. Make sure to save this document, even after you have filed your taxes.
Antwerp city council provides an allowance (“kinderopvangtoelage” in Dutch) for children at a daycare facility with a fixed price. More information about this allowance and how to apply for it can be found on the website of the city of Antwerp.
Daycare facilities are usually open between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday, closing for a certain period during the summer and Christmas holidays.
Please be aware that places at daycare facilities in Antwerp are taken very quickly and therefore you should reserve your place well in advance.
The daycare facilities can be contacted directly and a full list of all those in Antwerp can be found on the website of the city of Antwerp. If there is no place available at your preferred facility, we recommend putting yourself on the waiting list (or even several waiting lists). Please note that private daycare facilities with a fixed price might ask you to pay a deposit upon registration on the waiting list.
