All international staff and their family members living in Belgium need to be registered with a Belgian health insurance provider to be covered for medical costs.
Family members can be registered with the health insurance provider through the staff member without any additional fee. However, if the spouse is working (for an employer or on a self-employed basis) they will have to register on their own and pay the annual fee.
The International Staff office can also assist family members with registration with the health insurance provider upon arrival in Belgium.
Please note that health insurance for family members will only be activated after a police check upon registration in Belgium. We therefore recommend that you apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in your home country (if it’s an EU country) or take out private health insurance (a travel insurance for example) for your first few weeks/months in Belgium.
