The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Analytical Forensic Toxicology.

The PhD project will be executed in the Toxicological Centre (TC) with extensive analytical expertise and instrumental capabilities related to environmental and human exposure assessment. An important research line at the TC involves forensic toxicology, where the use of medication, alcohol and drugs is monitored in a medico-legal context.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of analytical forensic toxicology. Your research will be focused on developing, optimising & validating new analytical strategies for implementation in systematic toxicological analysis (STA) for judicial inquiries. STA is a vital screening step in forensic toxicology which requires the highest possible coverage of toxicants, including both novel and re-emerging legal & illicit drugs.
  • You will develop analytical methods based on liquid and/or gas chromatography coupled to (high resolution) mass spectrometry for the reliable identification of toxicants in various sample types, including blood, urine, vitreous humour, organs, and hair.
  • You will set up a workflow for proficient data analysis & reporting.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Toxicological Centre.
  • You will present your research at national and international workshops and conferences.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry of Biomedical Sciences or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You are interested in analytical chemistry and forensic toxicology.
  • You are interested in using various software tools for automation of data analysis & reporting.
  • You can communicate fluently in English, both oral and written.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1/10/2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
