The Department of History in the Faculty of Arts is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Modern African History

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in History. The PhD project focusses on the role of women in Informal Cross-Border Trade (ICBT) along the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, from the late 19th century to present. You will use a combination of archival research and oral history interviews.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for Department of History.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in History, African Studies, Anthropology, Development Studies or a related field, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • Preferably, you have previous experience with fieldwork in Central Africa.
  • Preferably, you have previous experience with archival research.
  • Preferably, you are proficient in English, French and Swahili.
  • Preferably, you can demonstrate a broader interest in the region under study and/or women’s studies.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of 2 years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another 2 years.  
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.    
  • You will do most of your work at Stadscampus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
