The Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of “neuroscience with focus on the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline”.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of neurosciences in the Neurochemistry and Behaviour group at the Experimental Neurobiology Unit in collaboration with the Experimental Laboratory of Translational Neuroscience. This 4-year scholarship is focused on the link between hearing loss, cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. The association between hearing impairment and dementia has emerged as a major public health challenge and has triggered increasing interest with significant opportunities for earlier diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Hearing loss appears as a risk factor for cognitive impairment, and has been identified as a potential modifiable age-related condition linked to dementia. Few studies so far have examined the relationship between hearing loss and the molecular changes in the brain, and more specifically in the hippocampus, that lead to cognitive dysfunction. This project aims to unravel the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cognitive decline induced by inner ear dysfunction in valid mouse models for neurodegeneration.
  • You present your work at national and international workshops and conferences and you publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You take part in the UAntwerp doctoral study programme.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks in the field of Neurosciences and of Laboratory Animal Science.
  • You will supervise bachelor- and master students.

Profile

  • You hold a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Neurosciences (or related disciplines) or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results. Publications and work experience in a research environment are an asset.
  • You meet the criteria for an FWO fellowship application basic research or strategic basic research.
  • You are in the possession of a FELASA attest category C or Function A/C.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have excellent communication and writing skills in English. Knowledge of Dutch (or willingness to learn on short notice) is a plus.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years.
  • The planned start date is 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken (Universiteitsplein 1, 2610 Wilrijk) in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
