The Department of Molecular Imaging, Pathology, Radiotherapy & Oncology (MIPRO) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (in collaboration with VITO) is looking for a full time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of pathology and proteomics.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of Medical Sciences. More specific, you will work on the validation of predictive peptide biomarkers to classify non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients based on their response to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. You will work both at the pathology department of Antwerp University Hospital (UZA), where you will be responsible for the inclusion of the patient samples, and the UAntwerpen Centre for Proteomics, where you will analyse lung biopsies using mass spectrometry imaging. The imaging data, together with all other relevant clinical and omics data, will serve as input to generate a statistical prediction model, that will be built together with the bioinformatics team.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project, disseminate your results to the scientific community and the larger public via meetings and conferences.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in (Biomedical) Sciences or Pharmaceutical Sciences or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You are e real team player and are able work independently.
  • You have a critical, scientific mindset and are interested in proteomics technology and data analysis.
  • You have basic knowledge of statistical tools.

What we offer

  • We offer a full-time PhD scholarship for a period of 1 year. After a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be extended for additional periods of 1 year, up to a maximum of 4 years in total.
  • The planned start date is 1st September 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at UZA/UAntwerpen, Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
