The Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation & Interpreting Studies in the Faculty of Arts is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of translation studies and media accessibility.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the fields of Translation Studies/Media Accessibility and Cognitive Psychology working on a project entitled Optimising the processing of audio description – The impact of narration speed on cognitive load in Audio Description. The project will take an empirical and experimental approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods used in Translation Studies and Cognitive Psychology. The project is centred around three main phases: in a first phase it will conceptualise and operationalise the concept of narration speed in order to be able to measure it in audio description. In a second phase it will determine how cognitive load can be measured in audio description with a focus on the preparation of adequate stimuli and on the determination of the optimal combination of measuring instruments. Finally, in a third phase, an experiment will be set up to determine the impact of different narration speeds on the cognitive load imposed on the target audience of audio description.
  • For this project, you will work within the TricS research group (https:// uantwerpen.be/en/research-groups/translation-interpreting/about-us/), in close collaboration with the Antwerp Social Lab (https:// www.uantwerpen.be/nl/onderzoeksgroep/antwerp-social-lab/), the University’s Core Facility specialising in experimental cognitive research in the social sciences and humanities.
  • You will communicate about your research by publishing scientific A1 articles related to the research project, in collaboration with your two supervisors. In addition you will present the research at (inter)national conferences in the relevant research fields.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching, research and organisational support tasks for the Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting Studies, , the OPEN Expertise Centre (https://www.opentoegankelijk.be/en) and for the Antwerp Social Lab.
  • You will carry out a limited number of tasks for the editorial board of the Journal of Audiovisual Translation and Linguistica Antverpiensia.

Profile

  • You hold a Master's degree in Translation Studies, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Psychology, Media Studies or another related discipline, or will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You have an excellent knowledge of Dutch (at least language level C2 of the European reference framework).
  • You have excellent English communication and writing skills.
  • Previous experience with empirical and/or experimental research, possibly with psychophysiological instruments, and statistical analysis (e.g. demonstrated in the form of a master’s dissertation or published research articles) will be favourably taken into account.
  • Previous experience with (research in) audio description or audiovisual translation with a focus on (cognitive) user experience in general and reading speed in particular, will be favourably taken into account.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis software such as R, STATA or SPSS is recommended.
  • Knowledge of Python will be favourably taken into account.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another two years.
  • The planned start date is 1 November 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive eco cheques, an Internet connection allowance, a bicycle allowance, or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at the University of Antwerp’s City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
