The Department of Communication Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Antwerp is seeking talented and motivated post-doctoral researcher for a research project on Boredom and smartphone use. The goal of the project is to investigate neurophysiological indicators of boredom and whether these are predictive of smartphone use and specific media content selection. The regulatory qualities of smartphone use, and media content will also be investigated. We aim to build on and expand media selection theories, such as Mood Management Theory, in the context of boredom and smartphone use.

The position is embedded within the research group Media & ICT in Organisations & Society (MIOS). MIOS is dedicated to the scientific study of individuals’ uses of media and digital technologies in interpersonal relations and in interaction with organizations, to gain insight into computer-mediated communication, its applications and effects, and to pursue evidence-based communication strategies, instruments and policy and the Antwerp Social Lab, a state-of the art lab facility using psychophysiological and behavioural methods that capture human interactions in interpersonal and technology-mediated contexts.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in the field of Media & Communication, with a demonstrable interest in (mobile) media psychology, and with an expertise in experimental research and psychophysiological methods.
  • You are comfortable in doing independent psycho(physio)logical research in a lab setting.
  • You have demonstrable experience in writing scientific papers and grant proposals.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You can speak and write fluently in English. Knowledge of Dutch language is an asset.

What we offer

  • We offer a full-time appointment for a period of 12 months(which can be extended after positive evaluation and depending on the budget), part-time appointments can be discussed.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a principal research fellow in the Contract Research Staff category (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, a group insurance, an income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.

The planned start date is March 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.

  • You will do most of your work at city campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment, and the research work is done at the Antwerp Social Lab (with state-of-the art lab facilities).
