The Department of Literature in the Faculty of Arts has the following two part-time (20% and 25%) vacancies: teaching assistant in the field of literatures in English.
Position
As a teaching assistant, you will be part of the Academic Assistant Staff (Dutch: Assisterend Academisch Personeel, AAP). Your main focus will be on supporting practice-based teaching. In addition, you will actively contribute to service activities.
Education
- You will assist in and also teach practice-based programme components in the field of literatures in English. You teach practical seminars to BA students and guest lectures in both the BA and MA programmes.
- Your teaching role will evolve along with the study programmes.
- You will play a role in ensuring activating, student-centred and competence-driven education.
- You will assist in the development of the writing track for students of English, new didactic and assessment formats, and teaching materials.
- You will supervise students for the writing of their BA dissertations and serve as an assessor for both BA and MA dissertations.
Services
- You will play an active role in the academic and societal service provision of the section of literatures in English within the programme committee of Linguistics and Literature. Among other things, you will assist in student recruitment and alumni activities, serve on boards and committees for educational affairs, and participate in the organisation of activities.
Profile
- You hold a Master’s degree in Linguistics and Literature with a demonstrable focus on Anglophone literatures or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
- Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. Teaching experience or a certificate of pedagogical competence obtained through a teacher training programme or similar course would be to your advantage.
- You take a student-focused approach and you activate student learning.
- You can demonstrate good communication skills and you are able to get complex information across clearly.
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
- You show a sense of initiative and are able to respond to your teaching duties in a flexible manner.
What we offer
- We offer two separate appointments as teaching assistant for a period of 1 year each. The percentage of your appointment (20% or 25%) is determined by the selection committee after consultation with the selected candidates. Following a positive evaluation, the appointment can be renewed.
- Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for an assistant (Academic Assistant Staff, AAP). If you work part time, your salary is calculated proportionally on the basis of your employment percentage.
- You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- The planned starting date is 15 September 2025.
- You will do most of your work at the City Campus of the University of Antwerp in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
