We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.
The Departments of Physics/Chemistry in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of hyperspectral fluorescence imaging and detailed optical spectroscopy of the interaction of carbon nanotubes with chiral molecules adsorbed on or encapsulated within the SWCNTs.
Position 1
- You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of Experimental Physics. You will be embedded in the and will be co-supervised by (Physics) and (Chemistry) within a project funded by FWO. The first project focuses on studying the interaction of carbon nanotubes with chiral molecules, through hyperspectral fluorescence imaging and other spectroscopic techniques. Moreover, you will also be in charge of the development of chiral fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging. This project not only involves the spectroscopic characterisation and instrument development but will also require you to prepare your own samples (filling of carbon nanotubes, structure sorting of carbon nanotubes), hence experience in chemical preparation techniques is a plus.
- You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
- You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the department of Physics.
Profile
- You hold a Master degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science. Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.

Knowledge of Matlab is a plus and additional experience in one (or more) of the following fields is highly appreciated: laser spectroscopy, chiroptical spectroscopy, nanoscience, carbon nanotube characterization and/or processing, physical chemistry.
What we offer
- We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of one year. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another three years.
- The planned start date is April 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.
- Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
- You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
