Join our team as a bioinformatician / data manager
The Rademakers Lab at the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurolgy is looking for a full-time bioinformatician/data manager to support our team in analyzing, obtaining, maintaining and using publicly available as well as internal patient, sample and omics data in the context of neurodegenerative research. The Rademakers Lab addresses a broad set of questions related to frontotemporal dementia and related neurodegenerative disorders, with an emphasis on understanding the genetic etiology and developing diagnostics and treatment methods for these diseases. For this purpose, we generate and analyze large datasets, including short and long-read genome sequencing of hundreds of patient- and control individuals, single-nuclei transcriptome sequencing, proteomics, and methods to analyze the methylome. We now seek to expand our team with someone who will assist in processing sequencing data, participate in a number of research programs as bioinformatics support, and contribute to the development of software and pipelines.
Position
As our bioinformatician and data manager, you will work closely with the PI, postdocs, and PhD students in the team. You will be responsible for maintaining and supporting our internal and externally acquired patient, sample, and associated genomics, transcriptomics, and other ‘-omics’ datasets. You will acquire specific publicly available datasets and process them using in-house pipelines. You will also provide support for our internal databases and analysis pipelines.
- Perform bioinformatic analyses of genomic and transcriptomic data sets
- Consulting with our research group to get to know different needs
- Submission and transfer of data
- Manage the requests to send out data to collaborators and external parties
- Scouting for publicly available datasets and downloading the appropriate ones for research in the center
- Prepare documentation for accessing the publicly available datasets and maintain the resource. Maintain an overview of what we already have in-house of datasets
Profile
- Able to work independently with attention to detail and to respect deadlines
- Proficiency in the Linux environment and cluster experience
- Programming skills in Python or R
- Keen interest in sequencing data processing and analysis
- Experience with a workflow system such as Snakemake or Nextflow is a plus
- Experience with data analysis of long-read sequencing and awareness of the biotechnological background is a plus.
- Interest in and aptitude for IT, especially in data Previous experience working in data management is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of different life science datasets, previous experience with larger sequencing datasets is a plus.
- Understand the importance of publicly available assets in scientific research.
- Knowing data protection rules and other regulatory rules and directives concerning biological data is a plus
- Motivated and independent while being able to interact effectively with other members of the team
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English; Dutch language proficiency is a plus
- Team player with good time management, communication, and organizational skills
- Candidates with a bachelor's or master's degree in bioinformatics are strongly encouraged to apply. The position is also open to candidates with a bachelor's or master's degree in other life science fields and equivalent experience in bioinformatics and data analysis.
