Within the framework of the Electrification Institute of UAntwerp (ELIN), recently established with the mission to be a global reference in innovation in industrial electrification and to contribute to a better planet and economic prosperity, we are looking for a full-time specialised staff member-expert lab technician, to support research in electrochemical reactors, plasma reactors, and other electrified reactors and electrification methods, for sustainable chemistry applications.

Position

The position includes technical support within the Electrification Institute, specifically for the research groups ELCAT, PLASMANT and ElectrifHY, in building their reactors and connection with (HV) power supplies. These groups are performing world-top level research in the field of sustainable chemistry by electrochemistry, plasma technology and other electrified reactors, e.g., for CO2 conversion to renewable fuels and green H2 production.

You will support the Institute in:

  • Purchase, installation and maintenance of equipment (and components) in the labs, among others, electrochemical, plasma and other electrified reactors and high voltage generators;
  • Technical training and guidance of bachelor, master and PhD students and postdocs in using these reactors and high voltage generators;
  • Calibration of the equipment (e.g., mass flow controllers and analytics (GC,GC-MS, FTIR, ICP-MS) and safety (e.g. gas sensors).

Specific tasks:

  • You design and update protocols for periodic maintenance/checking/calibration of the equipment, detectors, gas connections, ...; and procedures for troubleshooting in the lab;
  • As lab responsible, you are alert for technical flaws and dangerous situations, which you discuss with your supervisors, and with the technical and/or prevention services of the university;
  • You work out the risk and safety analyses for working with electrified reactors, gases and chemicals;

Profile

  • You have a diploma in professional or academic bachelor (e.g. chemistry, electromechanics, or equivalent competences by experience.
  • Students who will obtain their diploma this academic year can already apply.  
  • You have specific knowledge about safely working in laboratory.
  • You are fluent with MS Office.
  • You have good English speaking and writing skills.
  • You are communicative.
  • You are customer-friendly, integer, creative, quality-oriented and collaborative.
  • You are very good in planning and organizing.
  • You like to work in a team.

What we offer

  • We offer a permanent contract for an indefinite period in a very dynamic research environment.
  • You will receive a gross monthly salary within pay band 5.1-7.1 of the of the Administrative and Technical Personnel. Your entry-level grade (usually grade 5) will depend on your relevant professional experience. If you work part time, your salary is calculated proportionally on the basis of your employment percentage.
  • You will receive meal vouchers, ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, a group insurance, an income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You can work according to a flexible working schedule.
  • You will have 40 days holidays and a collective closing week between Christmas and New Year.
  • You work at BlueApp, the pre-incubator for Sustainable Chemistry of the University of Antwerp, in a brand-new building, with dedicated research labs and a pilot hall, at the Blue Gate site (Olieweg 97, Antwerpen), in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
