The Center for Medical Genetics of the University of Antwerp and the University Hospital Antwerp (UZA) is a large clinical, diagnostic and research center. Within this setting, Prof. Bart Loeys heads the Cardiogenetics research group, which works closely with the cardiology and cardio surgery departments of the UZA. The primary goal of this research group is to contribute significantly to the knowledge of genetic, biochemical and molecular mechanisms leading to hereditary cardiac arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies and aneurysms. Prof. Aline Verstraeten's Functional Genomics research team aims to further elucidate and therapeutically address the disease mechanisms underlying aortopathy and skeletal dysplasia.
The research groups on Cardiogenetics and Functional Genomics within the Center for Medical Genetics of the University of Antwerp are looking for a full-time skilled and motivated bioinformaticus to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate has a strong background in bioinformatics and is eager to take on the challenge of further elucidating the molecular landscape of inherited cardiovascular diseases.
Position
The position includes the following tasks:
- Provide support to the Cardiogenetics and Functional Genomics and research group with the analyses of “omics” data, the focus of which will be primarily on next generation sequencing (including genomics, transcriptomics, methylomics and proteomics) data.
- Collaborate with other bioinformaticians and researchers to understand and address their computational needs.
- Implement, update and optimize bioinformatics tools and pipelines both in local and cloud environments.
Profile
- You have (or expect to obtain in the near future) a professional bachelor’s degree in (bio)informatics, computer science, or a related field or equivalent competences gained through prior work experience
- You have good oral and written knowledge of English
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation
- You have knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R, ….
- You are familiar with version control systems (e.g., Git)
- You are familiar with or are willing to learn common bioinformatics tools and databases
- You understand Linux/Unix systems and shell scripting
- You are excelling in problem-solving and have good communication skills
- You can work independently and as part of a team
- You are willing to learn and implement new technologies/tools
- You have strong skills in planning and organisation
- You have experience with high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud computing platforms (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud) or are willing to learn more
What we offer
- We offer you a fixed-term employment contract; 1 year with possibility of extension after positive evaluation.
- You will receive a gross monthly salary within pay band 4.1-6.1 of the pay scales of the Administrative and Technical Staff. Your entry-level grade depends on your relevant professional experience.
- You will receive meal vouchers, ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, group insurance, an income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- We offer flexible working hours.
- You will have 40 days of annual leave and collective leave for 1 week when the university is closed, between Christmas and New Year.
- You will do most of your work at Center of Medical Genetics (Prins Boudewijnlaan 43, 2650 Edegem) in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
