This artificial lung is a type of breathing machine that was in use during the polio epidemic from 1950 to 1960. The paralyzed patient was placed in the artifical lung, with only his head sticking out. By creating negative pressure around the body, the chest of the patient would rise, thus simulating breathing. The remarkable thing about this 'iron' lung is that it is actually made of wood.
