Joseph's Dreams - Modern Visions

Conference "Joseph’s Dreams - Modern Visions"
Princeton University, October 29, 2017

The figure of Joseph is among the most intriguing and multifaceted in the Hebrew Bible: favored son, beautiful boy, envied and betrayed brother, seduced stranger, dreamer and interpreter of dreams, economic advisor, and a primary model of the assimilated “court Jew” with multiple allegiances. These many dimensions and their interaction have inspired multiple artistic and cultural reconfigurations that we regard as part and parcel of the reception of the text. The conference “Joseph’s Dreams - Modern Visions” explored the ways in which the story of Joseph has travelled beyond its biblical origins into other historical and cultural settings, acquiring new forms and meanings.
