When we relate to art, the artwork is often presented as a passive object that we talk about, think about, reflect on and discuss. Thijs Lijster proposes to think through art instead. His starting point is that a work of art thinks back. This has far-reaching consequences for our understanding of art, for art criticism and for the relationship between art and philosophy. Lijster shows how we can think through art by connecting work by artists such as Maarten Baas, Marina Abramovic and Damien Hirst to thinkers such as Michel de Montaigne, Walter Benjamin and Boris Groys. Lijster's essays touch on diverse subjects such as the modern experience of time, self-help, post-truth, financial capitalism and the Anthropocene.
