Annelies Van Assche (Ghent University) and Timmy De Laet (University of Antwerp) have compiled a special issue for the Flemish performing arts journal Documenta on the archiving of dance in Flanders. The initiative for this issue emerged from “CoDa | Cultures of Dance,” the Research Network for Dance Studies founded in 2020 and funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).On the occasion of the Day of Dance, the special issue will be launched during a roundtable conversation with the contributing authors and the guest editors. Together they will discuss the manifold challenges dance poses to archivization, in relation to the Flemish dance scene and against the background of international developments.

How can a region with such a flourishing dance scene ensure the preservation of its past? What can historical documents teach us about a movement art like dance? Which choreographers and dancers did not make it into history and could be brought back to life through the archive? How can the international orientation of the field be reconciled with the local anchoring of dance heritage?

These and other questions will be addressed during this roundtable. Do come and join us on 23 April 2022 (19h00) at Kaaitheater! The event is free and will be held in Dutch (with the possibility to switch to English, if required).
