Les philosophes juifs médiévaux – de Saadia Gaon à Hasday Crescas, en passant par Maimonide – emploient des stratégies d’écriture ésotérique lorsqu’ils traitent de la question de la création du monde. L’usage d’un tel art d’écrire ne saurait s’expliquer par le seul impératif de prudence ou la crainte de la persécution (il ne fait pas bon de mettre en cause des opinions traditionnelles). Il s’impose quand se rencontrent les sciences philosophiques et l’herméneutique rabbinique : la pensée est alors exposée à des problèmes qui mettent en défaut les capacités du langage. En atteste notamment l’effort répété des philosophes pour tenter d’énoncer le surgissement du dicible.
