As part of the Lumumba Legacies series, we invite you to an evening of powerful cinema and critical conversation.

In Coconut Head Generation, director Alain Kassanda invites us into the heart of a student film club at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s oldest university. Every Thursday, these students turn a small lecture hall into a vibrant political space, where cinema becomes a tool for reflection, debate, and collective empowerment.

The film’s title, originally a dismissive label for so-called thoughtless youth, is reclaimed by this generation of students who challenge conformity and embrace critical thinking. With sensitivity and intimacy, Kassanda captures the energy, humour, and resistance that shape their discussions, revealing how film can spark political consciousness and community.

This event is part of the series marking the 100th anniversary of Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through lectures, screenings, and public discussions, Lumumba Legacies explores how his vision continues to inspire movements for decolonisation and justice today.
