From handmade gravel to handmade urbanism

This project explores the value chain of sand and stones manually extracted from Lake Kivu, transported to Bukavu, and transformed into the city's handmade architecture. By focusing on human labor, environmental protection, and urban development, the project aims to enhance the sustainability and safety of extraction, transport, and construction practices. It will also train PhD and MSc students in relevant fields and foster multidisciplinary research through collaboration between the Centre d’Expertise en Gestion Minière (CEGEMI) and a new Academic Design Office (ADO). With active stakeholder engagement, the project seeks to drive positive societal impact and sustainable urbanization in Bukavu.
