Cities should assume an important role in climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. There is a growing need to develop nature-based solutions with green, blue and hybrid urban infrastructure that approach climate change in an integrated, systemic and sustainable manner. While investments in nature-based solutions are proving to be very cost-effective in achieving environmental and societal goals, there is a large gap between effective investments and needs. Indeed, nature-based solutions projects often have very high initial costs and very diffuse long-term benefits that are not easily translated into revenue streams.

InnoFiNS assumes that climate adaptation transformation can be accelerated by mobilising private investment for nature-based solutions through innovative financing techniques alongside traditional public finance.
