Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES)
To support the implementation and maintenance of green-blue measures, working towards a more climate-robust landscape, we propose a system of "Payment for ecosystem services" (PES). PES is an agreement between a provider of an ecosystem service and someone who pays for it. The focus of PES is on positive externalities. The central idea is that those who protect or provide ecosystem services should be compensated by those who benefit from this protection. Think of a farmer who, by taking good care of his land, limits erosion and nitrogen use, so the river does not get polluted and downstream stakeholders can enjoy a clean river.
