In a nutshell

In this living lab, we investigate whether a payment-for-ecosystemservices (PES) system could contribute to creating a climate-robust landscape. We investigate whether a PES system could motivate farmers (or other landowners) to adjust their farming practices to additionally provide the ecosystem service 'water storage'.

Challenge

How to link beneficiaries (companies, insurers, recreationists,...) of the ecosystem service 'water storage' to providers (farmers)?

NBS

Area-based measures in function of a climate-robust landscape based on the Open Space Plan Interfluvium.

Instrument

Payment for ecosystem services links beneficiaries belonging to the local food supply chain (supermarkets, food processing companies, other farmers, citizens, ...) to ecosystem service providers (often farmers).

Research question

Which private actors can co-pay for water management on agricultural land?
