Image database of small and medium large stained-glass windows
Research concerning 'material culture' in line with 'Urban Studies' as defined research topics within the University of Antwerp, Faculty of Design Sciences
Research questions.
The image database acts as a benchmark for all derived research concerning small and medium large stained-glass windows in and from the historic Lowlands. Its content forms the base for publications of professors and students. The database is being consulted on a regular basis by a wide range of national and international scolars.
Impact.
The database has no free access because of the copyright legislation. Nevertheless we frequently accept requests and formulate answers (average 5 per week). The database has also been used for the publication of three books (checklists) and two volumes are prepared for publication. These books are published under the auspices of the Corpus Vitrearum.
The image database contains high-resolution pictures of stained-glass windows and related designs (vidimussen), cardboards and prints. The database is foremost geographically structured and contains stained-glass windows and individual small panels in and from the historic Lowlands. Additionally, files are integrated with chapters on designers, iconography, heraldic symbolism, etc. The database consists at this moment 40.000 images and is continuously updated with about 30 images each week.
Most requests come from researchers who know about our database through our publications and/or their membership of the Corpus vitrearum, ICOMOS orICOM.
