Human Centered Design Roadmap
Research theme and project (for SME’s in the Flanders region):
Human-centered research & design complementing industry on societal impact.
Research questions.
The new products development process confronted with and extended by the principles and techniques of Human-Centered Design (HCD).
- What is human-centered design?
- How can SME’s be encouraged and supported for user research in their design process?
- What are the criteria for selecting HCD methods and what is needed to use them efficiently?
- How can the HCD tool become the moderator between various departments?
The HCD Roadmap, a co-creative tool, enables 'being seen' during the design process, connects insights and shows project phase responsibilities throughout the organization.’
Impact.
The HCD roadmap has become a chapter in the Human Centered Design book: "Cecilia's keuze" (EAN: 9789020987232). Cited in the year report of Flanders InShape
As part of Human Centered design research in general disseminated to a larger audience (thanks to the competence center of Antwerp Management School)
(i) The HCD Roadmap poster that maps the process and gives the leitmotif for a concrete design process.
(ii) A stack of cards from which the team can select within a range techniques they intend to apply.
(iii) The tokens that describe the techniques: they provide a substantive and concrete support in the selection.
(iv) A guide for the facilitator.
On multiple occasions the HCD roadmap is still in practice with students and in collaboration with industry:
- International Workshopweek (Ba/Ma Fac. of Design Sciences)
- Innovation week (2nd Master product development)
Verhaert New Products and Services used it alongside their process to inform / sensitize clients.
Flanders InShape used it as a chapter of their Human Centered design book "Cecilia's Keuze".
