University of Porto, Center for Research in Education, Portugal

CIIE - Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Educativas was founded in 1988 and is a research unit institutionally hosted by ‘Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação’ of the University of Porto and is financed by FCT. Civically engaged in the promotion of an education involved in the fight against inequalities and social injustices, UPORTO/CIIE is organized in such a way as to articulate its research activities with the training of young researchers and to provide services to the community. To achieve these purposes, the center integrates researchers in several fields, namely Education Sciences, Sociology, Social Services and History. It also reckons upon the participation of professionals involved in social and educational matters. In order to contribute to an educated public opinion, UPORTO/CIIE created a publishing line, consisting of the journal Educação, Sociedade & Culturas (Education, Society & Cultures), and promoted a series of non-regular publications directed towards a diversified public.

Helena Costa Araujo, UPORTO Team leader

Helena Costa ARAUJO is full Professor in Sociology of Education and Gender Studies and habilitation in Education at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto. Furthermore she is Director of Research Education Centre (CIIE) and the scientific journal Educação, Sociedade e Culturas [Education, Society and Cultures]. She is also the principal researcher of the research financed project Building Network in education: discourses and strategies of local education authorities in school achievement and school drop-out, FCT, 2010-2013. Her research interests entail local authorities and networking regarding school achievement and school drop-out. Biographical narratives of young people in early school leaving. Education as a social right. Gender, education and citizenship.

Antonio Magelhaes - Associate Professor

António Manuel MAGALHAES Evangelista de Sousa has a PhD in Higer Education Studies and is Associated Professor with Habilitation in Education at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto. Presently, Magalhaes is director of the Department of Education at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto – Portugal and principal investigator of the research project Governing and Governance in Higher Education, part of the European Science Foundation Collaborative Research Project, Transforming Universities in Europe (TRUE). His primary research interests are the relationship between state and educational systems and institutions, political steering and governance in education, policy making and implementation and citizenship.

Sofia Marques da Silva - Assistant Professor

Sofia Marques da Silva is a assistant professor at Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal, and member of CIIE – Educational Research and Intervention Centre. She is a PhD in Educational Sciences since 2008 and has research experience in doing ethnographic and Life Stories research on youth cultures, gender and education. Lately has been involved in an online and offline ethnography with children and young people from rural and border regions. Has publications at national and international level. Is also a researcher in different projects (H2020, Erasmus +) and is the national coordinator of an Erasmus Plus project team.

As a teacher she has experience in teaching Research methodologies; Sociology of Education and Youth Cultures. She has experience in supervising Master and PhD thesis in Educational Sciences, Psychology and Health and Education. Is Co-convenor of Network 19 (Ethnography) and Network 5 (Children and Youth at Risk in Urban Education) of the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER). She is reviewer and member of editorial boards of international journals. She is an elected member of the Executive Board of the Portuguese Society of Educational Sciences (SPCE), representing the SPCE in EERA Council (European Educational Research Association). Sofia Marques da Silva has been involved the evaluation of international research projects from the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (SW) and the DANISH COUNCIL FOR INDEPENDENT RESEARCH. At national level she has been involved with the Science and Technology Foundation in evaluating PhD thesis for publication and is consultant of the National Federation of Youth Associations. She was the chair of the European Conference on Educational Research (EERA/ECER), 2014 at the University of Porto. She is an elected member of the Interin Board of SIRIUS Network, representing also CIIE at SIRIUS. Since the beginning of 2015 is an expert of NESET II.

Cristina Rocha - Senior Researcher

Cristina TAVARES Teles da Rocha graduated as PhD on Education Sciences and is Associated Professor in Education at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto. Currently, She is Director of the First Cycle in Education Sciences at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto. Tavares’ primary research interests are children and young people in the contexts of family and school education, a sociological and socio-historical perspective on the family as an educational institution in its relationships with school - family education as a research domain and as a field of social and community education.

Eunice Macedo - Senior Researcher

Eunice Macedo, PhD is a research fellow at CIIE and experienced teacher at diverse levels including adult and teacher training. Currently she is a post-doc in the international project RESL.eu - Reducing Early School Leaving in the EU [FP7-SSH-2012-1] and is co-coordinating the Project “Building Pillars of the European Project with Education Culture and Citizenship” an initiative of the European Commission, mediated by CIEJD (Jacques Delors European Information Center). She presides to the Board of Direction of Associação Espaços - Alternative Projects for Women and Men and is in the Board of Direction of Paulo Freire Institute of Portugal. She has published several works and presented papers at national and international encounters particularly in the areas of citizenship, education, youth and gender. Sofia Almeida Santos - Postdoctoral Researcher

Sofia Almeida Santos has a European PhD in Education Sciences (FPCE, University of Porto, 2015) and is working as a PhD researcher in RESL.eu. Previously she obtained a Master degree in Education and since 2006 has been working as a research assistant in the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) in several research projects in the following areas: gender studies, sex education and youth sexualities, teenage pregnancy and motherhood, Early School Leaving. She has been a visiting researcher in Exchange programes with other universities such as University of Cambridge, Leeds University (UK) and Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania). She has presented several papers in international conferences, as well as published a number of articles in peer reviewed journals, some chapters and more recently the coauthored book: Sexualidades, Gravidez e Juventude: relações sociais e educativas [Sexualities, Pregnancy and Youth: social and educational relations]. Cosmin Ionut Nada - Research Assistant

Cosmin Ionut Nada was born in 1987 in Romania, city of Constanta. In 2009 he completes his university degree in International Relations and European Studies at the “Spiru Haret” University, in Bucharest. In 2010, he completes another degree in Journalism and Communication Studies at the University of Bucharest. In 2012, he moves to Portugal where he concludes his Master's in Educational Sciences at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Porto. In 2017 he obtains, from the same institution, a cum laude European PhD degree in Education (financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology – FCT) with a thesis entitled "There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ student: A narrative approach to the experience of migrant students in Portugal". Currently he is working for the RESL.eu project and he is interested in doing research on migration, citizenship and early school leaving.

Alexandra Oliveira Doroftei - Research Assistant

Alexandra Oliveira Doroftei is a research assistant at the Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Educativas (CIIE) [Centre for Research in Education] of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto. She concluded the European Master of Development Studies in Social and Educational Sciences - European Perspectives on Social Inclusion (http://www.social-inclusion.org/) in 2009. She will undertake her PhD studies under the scope of the RESL.eu project.

She was a member of the research team of the project «Building Local Networking in Education? Decision-makers' discourses and strategies on school achievement and dropout», funded by FCT (Portuguese National Foundation for Science and Technology), and of the project «Construction of European Citizenship in School», funded by the European Commission by the intermediation of the Jacques Delors European Information Centre.

Her research interests are social inclusion and exclusion, school (under)achievement, educational policies and educational networking.
