We invite applications for STRATEGO's first PhD Masterclass on the theme of "Federalism, Multi-Level Governance, Institutional Reform, and Territorial Integration of Minorities ", with expert scholar Francisco Javier Romero Caro. The goal of this PhD Masterclass is to provide a venue for networking, feedback and knowledge building of PhD students, stimulating progress in their research, and training their presentation and discussion skills. The PhD Masterclass will take place in Antwerp (Belgium) on October 21st, 2024 (13:00 – 17:30h CET).


Programme

  • 13:00 | Lecture by Francisco Javier Romero Caro, Institute for Comparative Federalism, Eurac Research, Italy

Francisco Javier Romero Caro (PhD) is Senior Researcher at the Eurac Research Institute for Comparative Federalism in Bolzano/Bozen (Italy). Previously, Assistant Professor at the Department of Law at Nebrija University (Madrid, Spain). Research assistant at the University of Bologna (Italy) and Postdoc researcher at the University of the Basque Country (Bilbao, Spain). His research interests encompass fiscal federalism, the territorial distribution of powers in multilevel systems (with a special focus on federal states) and the territorial integration of national minorities in secessionist contexts such as Canada or Spain. He won the XVII "Manuel Giménez Abad" Award and the European Commission awarded him with the Seal of Excellence in the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie call in a joint application with Eurac Research in a project on fiscal federalism and diversity accommodation. He has been a visiting researcher at the CEPC, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law, the University of Ottawa and the University of Edinburgh. He is author of peer-reviewed articles such as Horizontal Cooperation and Financial Relations in Spain (Revista de Estudios Políticos), Equalization and territorial integration in Canada: a nation building instrument? (Perspectives on Federalism), The Quasi-federal System of Spain (Encyclopedia of Contemporary Constitutionalism), La reforma del proceso de selección y nombramiento de los magistrados del Tribunal Supremo de Canadá: el caso particular de Quebec (Teoría y Realidad Constitucional), Senado y sistema federal en Canadá: ¿imposibilidad de una reforma deseable? (Revista de Estudios Políticos) and The Spanish vision of Canada’s Clarity Act: from idealization to myth (Perspectives on Federalism).

  • 13:45 | Presentations and discussions of ongoing research of PhD candidates

In a small group, participating PhD candidates will present their ongoing research (draft paper, new research idea, methodological framework,...) and receive feedback from expert scholar, Francisco Javier Romero Caro, and the other participants.

  • 16:30 | Networking drinks

We end the afternoon with some drinks and the opportunity to network.


How to apply?

To apply, please complete the online application form before October 2nd, 2024.

You will need to fill in (1) your personal details as well as provide a short description of (2) your research background and (3) the work you wish to present during the masterclass. Content-wise, we ask that you clearly relate your research work to the overall theme of the PhD Masterclass: "Federalism, multi-level governance, institutional reform, and territorial integration of minorities".

Given the goals of this PhD Masterclass, the aim is to keep the participant group small. We envision a maximum of 5 participants. Once your application is accepted, participation is free.

In order to prepare for a highly interactive learning experience, we will ask each participant to submit the research that you want to discuss during the presentations and discussions by October 11th, 2024 (this can be a research plan, work in progress, a draft paper, a new research idea, as well as finished work, depending on the stage of your PhD). We will make all papers available to all participants before the PhD Masterclass takes place and will assign a discussant for each paper. You will thus be asked to read each other’s papers.

Important dates

  • October 2: Deadline to submit your application.
  • October 11: Deadline to submit the research that you want to discuss during the presentations and discussions.
  • October 14-18: Please reserve some hours for reading other participants' work, giving feedback and preparing a visual representation of your own research for discussion.
  • October 21: PhD Masterclass in Antwerp. We will start at 13:00h CET sharp.
