Dorien Luyckx

Dorien Luyckx (1992) graduated as Digital journalist at the University of Goldsmiths in London in 2016 after finishing her master's degree in Journalism at the VUB in Brussels. She worked for two years as a digital storytelling producer and tech reporter at the Belgian financial newspaper De Tijd. She is also an alum from the Entrepreneurial Journalism program at the City University of New York. Currently, she’s part of MIOS, a research group within the Department of Communication Studies at University of Antwerp. She now studies the interdependent relationship between news companies, advertisers and readers, focusing on native advertising, business models for news, entrepreneurial journalism and startups.

Kenza Lamot

Kenza Lamot (1995) graduated in 2013 as Master in Media Studies with great praise. She currently works as a PhD researcher at the Department of Communication Studies and is a member of the research groups MPC and m2p. Her research interest is mainly situated at the crossroads of journalism and technology. With her PhD, Kenza aims to shed light on the adoption, uses and implications of audience analytics in contemporary newsrooms.

 

Dr. Simone Krouwer

Simone Krouwer (1992) obtained with highest honor a Master in Strategic Communication at the University of Antwerp. She obtained a PhD in 2020, with her doctoral thesis on native advertising. Her research seeks to increase our understanding of how readers process and evaluate different types of native advertising, and to help both media and advertisers to implement native advertising in an effective and sustainable manner.

 

Luc De Cleir

Luc De Cleir (1983) graduated in Political Science and EU-studies with high honor. His thesis was a European comparative study of social housing. After spending a decade in the technology industry, he started a communication agency and graduated as a mediator. He worked for the independent new site “Apache” for three years. His PhD research is focused on the tension between journalism, technological disruption and advertising.

 

Prof. dr. Steve Paulussen

Steve Paulussen is an associate professor in media and journalism studies at the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Antwerp. He is member of the research group Media, Policy and Culture (MPC). Between 2000 and 2012 he was a researcher at Ghent University, where he worked in the research group for Media & ICT (iMinds-MICT) and the Center for Journalism Studies (CJS). He also held part-time lecturer positions at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (2008-2012) and Erasmus University College Brussels (2012).

Most of his publications focus on different aspects of online journalism, participatory journalism, the professional profile of journalists, new media consumption and newsroom innovations. He is currently involved as a supervisor in PhD research projects on the role of social media and data in news and journalism (Michiel Johnson and Kenza Lamot), citizen media practices (Stevan Bodrozic), the media representation of human rights issues (Robin Reul) and advertising and business models for news media (Simone Krouwer and Dorien Luyckx).

Prof. Dr. Karolien Poels

Karolien Poels is a full professor of Strategic Communication and Persuasive Technologies at the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Antwerp. She is a member of the research group Media and ICT in Organizations and Society (MIOS). Since 2018, she is the Chair of the Department of Communication Studies (2018-2021). She is one of the founders of the Antwerp Social Lab which focuses on psychophysiological and behavioral methods to capture human interactions in interpersonal and mediated contexts. She is also the president of NeFCA (Netherlands-Flanders Communication Association).

Starting in the field of advertising research and emotions, her research has developed in wider, mainly ICT areas with a focus on online advertising and social media. She is currently involved as a supervisor in PhD projects on transparency and effectiveness in the implementation of native advertising (Simone Krouwer, 2020), sustainable advertising strategies for online news media (Dorien Luyckx and Luc De Cleir, ongoing), food advertising and online communication strategies (Katrien Maldoy and Paulien Decorte, ongoing).
