The role of capabilities in ownership succession of Business Families in Southeast Asia

Abstract

This study investigates the significance of capabilities in the ownership succession of business families in Southeast Asia, a region increasingly vital to the global economy. It addresses the often-overlooked process of ownership succession and its dynamics, emphasizing the unique cultural and philosophical contexts of Southeast Asia. By employing a qualitative case study approach, the research examines three business families and identifies three overarching capabilities necessary for effective active ownership, which positions prospective owners as champions of continuity and guardians of governance. The findings contribute to family business research by highlighting the diversity within family enterprise systems across different cultural contexts and opening avenues for further exploration in this field.
