Applied Mathematics Christmas Dinner - 2017 Edition
19 January 2017
The tradition of the Applied Mathematics Christmas dinner was established at the founding of the group in 2006. Due to the appealing nature of this event, it has been organized on a yearly basis since 2013.
The Applied Mathematics Christmas dinner is a recipe for a night of informal contact with current and former group members in a pleasant atmosphere of dining.

Applied Mathematics BBQ
1 July 2013
Applied Mathematics Social Event - Barbecue at Middelheim Park
The annual Applied Mathematics social summer event on Monday July 1st was again a particularly memorable gathering. The relaxed atmosphere and late-evening sun made the BBQ dinner at the Middelheim Park public barbeque an event for all AM members to enjoy.
Special thanks go to PostDocs Pieter Ghysels, Bram Reps and Wim Van Aarle, who will be leaving the group shortly. We wish them all the best in their future careers!
Franco-German Summer School on Inverse Problems and PDEs
7-11 October 2013
The Franco-German Summer School on Inverse Problems and PDEs takes place from October 7-11 at the University of Bremen, Germany. This event is generously supported by the Franco-German
University, the French Embassy in Germany, the University of Bremen and INRIA Saclay.
The summer school considers recent advances in analytical and numerical treatments of inverse problems for PDEs. A particular emphasis will be put on non-linear, qualitative and stochastic inversion methods. The courses are designed for advanced Master students, PhD students and PostDocs in mathematics. A limited number of participants will also have the opportunity to present their research in dedicated sessions.
More information on the summer school, a detailed program, and an online registration for this event can be found at the web site.
Student Paper Award for Siegfried Cools
17-22 March 2013
A panel of judges at the 16th Copper Mountain Conference (2013) has accredited Siegfried Cools, PhD student at TWNA Research Group (UA department of Mathematics and Computer Science) with one of the annual Student Paper Awards for the original and innovative research reported in the paper "An efficient Multigrid calculation of the Far field map for Helmholtz problems" (arxiv:1211:4451).
In cooperation with Wim Vanroose and Bram Reps, a new highly efficient Multigrid-based technique was developed for the calculation of the Far field scattering map, which represents the amplitude of scattered waves at large distances from the object of interest in every outgoing direction. The efficient computation of Far field mappings is of vital importance for the numerical solution of high-dimensional inverse scattering problems which are common in many current-day industrial (radar and sonar), biomedical (tomography) and quantum-physical (molecular and atomic reactions) applications.
Siegfried Cools will expound on the performed research during a special afternoon session at the 16th Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods (Colorado, USA) chaired by Van Emden Henson on Wednesday 20 March 2013 (conference website)
Wiskunde in-Zicht 2012-2013
8, 10 and 17 January 2013
