Perfecting the European lacquering recipes for copying Eastern lacquer was complex and led to many trials and errors. Hundreds of the recipes were written down and can be found in historical sources such as recipe books and treatises. By studying technological features such as ingredients and production methodology, this project aims to characterise the European lacquer recipes.
The expected results will gain produce new insights into the original appearance of European lacquers, the ingredients and production processes, certain degradation phenomena and consequently the conservation of European lacquerware in national and international collections.
