The Urban Travel Machines project is bringing together the worlds of poetry and immersive technology to create an unforgettable cultural experience. This innovative project revitalises the literary sector in Europe by combining slam poetry, cutting-edge technology, the expertise of three art schools in Antwerp, Helsinki, and Warsaw, where poetry performers and visual arts students collaborated to co-produce 360° immersive environments to showcase at three scientific planetariums in Tartu, Vienna, La Coruna, and will come together now in Brussels for the final showcase presentation.
UTM contributes to the renewal of the literary sector in Europe through the adoption of Immersive Technology. UTM enhances transnational mobility, new technology and audience engagement with regards to poetry performance. UTM builds upon:
- The networks and practices of slam poetry, a vibrant vector of audience expansion and artistic renewal, in urban and cultural diversification in the literary sector.
- Immersive technology in the context of literary creation.
- Tech infrastructure in 4 scientific planetariums, re-defining 3D projection technology as a compelling means of digital storytelling.
UTM comprises 3 art schools and 4 planetariums, who will build an Immersive Website to build, exchange and disseminate immersive tools and skills, and make these accessible for literary and visual artists beyond the project’s lifespan.
Programme
The colloquium will be streamed online with tutors & artists/poets to discuss techniques and tools, special requirements, do’s and don’ts and how to create immersive experiences as a poet and as an artist, related to the dome experience and possible VR integration. There is an open call for who wants to participate in the Open Mic at 19:00.

Brussels Planetarium Poetry Fest - 28-30 November 2024
This tenth edition of the Brussels Planetarium Poetry Fest marks the climax of a European translation of our project to Planetaria in Tartu, Vienna and A Coruna (UTM). The resulting diverse, beautiful, creative works will be presented on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 November 2024 at the Planetarium in Brussels. Expect an evening of international poets, each assisted by a projection created by a team of 3-5 artists. Work ranging from classic typography and analogue film recordings to AI image generation and gaming design: we have it all in this edition.
