Urbanicity and mental disorders are related to each other in a complex system of interactions between urban environment factors and psychological and neurobiological factors of individual city inhabitants. Based on interdisciplinary research and knowledge of UMH, actionable targets for prevention, treatment and policy can be identified, aimed at decreasing burdens of mental disorders in an urban context. Although the research domain of UMH only developed very recently, several research topics in CAPRI already contribute to the aims of this research domain:
- Research on specific interventions in community mental health care: providing mental health care in patients own natural environment demands adaptation of standardised health care taking into account the challenges and opportunities of environmental factors
- Research on public mental health in Antwerp focuses on the inventory of met and unmet needs and the organisation of mental health care
- Research on parenting support and parent-child interactions
- Research on impact of migration and asylum procedure on mental health
