Inge Somers

Bio

Inge Somers graduated as an interior architect at The Henry Van de Velde Institute, Antwerp, Belgium in 1989. Since 2006 she has been employed as a researcher and lecturer at the programme of Interior Architecture at the Faculty of Design Sciences, University of Antwerp. She defended her Ph.D. in September 2017 and is currently assistant professor. Her research focuses on the evolution of interior architecture as an academic discipline, the development of interior theory, interior education and social sustainability. She published her findings in The International Journal of Interior Architecture + Spatial Design and the Journal of Interior Design. She initiated and is co-president of the European Interior Educators and is member of the research group Henry van de Velde, more specifically of the research cel LabDesem.

Compact bathroom-dressing room by Charlotte Perriand – shown at the exposition Formes Utiles at the Salon des art ménagers (1952).

For me this design is the epitome of “ the generosity of small gestures” – a translation of an interior design attitude that stands for facilitating the everyday in the built environment and for specific attention for the user.
